Every issue of the Budget contains several "in memoriams" to deceased Amish, mostly mothers or fathers. " Typically, they appear on the first or second anniversary of the death. The burial process is usually carried out in the simplest way. Some Amish communities have the bodies embalmed, but many do not. The deceased is prepared for burial, the body washed and dressed by the family and friends. The tasks of informing relatives; preparing the burial site; constructing the plain, pine coffin; and other responsibilities are carried out swiftly by relatives and neighbors.
If an ordained person plans to move to a new community, there usually must be some prior approval by the membership of the settlement because, once he will take an active part in the religious life. It is generally known throughout the various Amish communities what position the different bishops have taken on important issues, and each is viewed in a particular light depending on his conservative or liberal stand. The major area of difference among Old Order Amish communities is their interpretation of "worldiness," which reflects the dominant convictions of the church district membership but is also strongly reinforced and in some cases created by the views of the bishop and to a lesser extent by those of the ministers and deacons.
