We drove up into the Oklahoma Panhandle, sixty miles northeast of Perryton, and looked it over. The ranch was located in the sandhills, fifteen miles northeast of Beaver, the county seat of Beaver County, Oklahoma. These sagebrush-covered hills are part of a large formation that begins some twenty miles west of Beaver and runs all the way to Woodward, Oklahoma. For a hundred miles along the course of the Beaver River, the sandhills begin at the flood plain on the north bank and extend four to seven miles to the north, rising two or three hundred feet above the level of the river.
It was in this lovely wooded valley that Bob Maple, Mark Mayo's grandfather, established the headquarters for his ten-thousand-acre YL Ranch back in the 1890s. Page 26 When I first saw the place in 1974, Mark and Billie Mayo and their three children lived in a large two-story house (the original ranch house plus additions and improvements), and the Hagars lived in a small white house fifty yards to the north. East of Mark's house stood a magnificent red brick barn built in 1944, with seven horse stalls, a saddle room, and a grain room on the ground floor, and a hay loft on the second level.
